A Fantastic Finish to Summer Sports Fixtures

As the summer term draws to a close, Park House students have once again shone across a variety of sports, ending the year on a high.

Our Year 8 girls' cricket team were crowned District Champions, the Year 7’s did superbly having a mixture of results but great to see some new faces represent school. The Year 9 cricket team impressed with two great wins at the cricket festival and had a few other friendlies versus the Downs but were close in the results. In an exciting milestone, the Year 7 & 8 girls played their first hard ball cricket match against Kennet—and came away with a fantastic win, 80 runs to 66.

Our Year 10s had rounders fixtures this term with some brilliant wins, however, played a strong Kennet team to finish despite this they played all their games with plenty of laughs along the way. The Year 9’s similarly had mixed results in rounders across the A and B teams, however, great to see so many girls out and playing.

In rounders, our KS3 girls travelled to Gloucester Academy for the GLT Rounders Festival. The Year 8s battled hard and finished 4th, and the Year 7s had an outstanding run, only narrowly missing out on 1st place to come a well-deserved 2nd.

Cricket has continued strongly across the board, with the 1st team boys including rising stars from the younger years. They lost out to Reading School but bounced back to beat St Bart’s with a commanding 6-wicket win. The Year 7s-10s have had several key games over this term with again a mixture of results.

Athletics has also been a major highlight this term. Students in the U13, U15, and U17 age groups competed in the district competition, with several standout performances leading to county team selections. Congratulations to:

JJ – 1st in shot put

Beth – 3rd in discus with a PB

Harriet – 1st in 1500m, qualifying for the English Championships – an incredible feat, especially as she’s competing a year young!

Well done to all our students for an amazing summer of sport—your passion, talent, and determination continue to make us proud.

On Tuesday 15th July, our Year 10 Art GCSE students enjoyed a creative and inspiring visit to The Base Art Gallery. The visit formed an important part of their ‘Living World’ project and gave pupils the opportunity to explore art in a real-world setting, helping them to deepen their understanding of context, technique, and meaning in artistic work.

The day began with a guided tour of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition. Pupils explored the powerful connection between nature and photography, learning how professional photographers use composition, light, and subject matter to create impactful and thought-provoking images. They were encouraged to select pieces that stood out to them and respond to reflective questions, followed by producing observational sketches based on their chosen works.

Later in the day, pupils were given a behind-the-scenes tour of the resident artist studios, where they gained insight into a wide range of styles and techniques. From bold graphic art to detailed portraiture, abstract work, and expressive clay sculptures, the visit provided an opportunity to see how professional artists develop and refine their ideas and materials.

After a well-deserved lunch break, pupils participated in a hands-on artist-led workshop focusing on wildlife art and its wider context — particularly the human impact on animals and the natural world. This linked directly with their GCSE coursework, sparking new ideas and meaningful discussions. Pupils worked with a variety of materials including pencils, collage, charcoal and pastels, and created expressive pieces that reflected both skill and emotion.

This visit was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to immerse themselves in professional art environments, engage in critical thinking, and reflect on their own creative practices — all while building strong links to their ongoing coursework. A huge well done to all who took part!

The night was a truly magical culmination of five years of hard work, friendship, and unforgettable memories, and it certainly lived up to all of my expectations. A massive credit to every student who contributed to this special event. Behaviour was impeccable students were a real credit to themselves, the school and parents.

Talk about arriving in style.
On 26th June we proudly celebrated those achievements at our annual Sports Presentation Evening, joined by special guest and Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Steve Frew, who inspired students with his story of perseverance and excellence.

A huge congratulations to all the most improved, players’ player winners along with our more prestigious awards of Leadership through Sport, Breakthrough Award, Outstanding Contribution Award and Boys and Girls Sports Personality for each year group.

On Sunday, 6th July, students from across Years 7 to 10 at Park House School had the incredible opportunity to visit the legendary All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club to attend the middle Sunday of the Wimbledon Championships. It was a truly special day filled with excitement, awe, and unforgettable moments! Our students were accompanied by our enthusiastic staff members—Mr. King, Mrs Benham, Miss Blanchard and Mrs. Hayes— and honestly, it was almost impossible to tell who was more excited: the students or the staff!

The adventure began bright and early, with the group leaving PHS amidst a buzz of anticipation. Some students couldn’t hide their sleepy yawns about the early start on a Sunday morning, but as soon as they arrived at Wimbledon around 10 am, all that fatigue was replaced by pure excitement and eager anticipation!

Our lucky group had tickets for No. 2 Court, which offered an excellent view of the day's thrilling matches. Throughout the day, the matches showcased top-tier tennis, and the students were captivated by the high level of skill and drama on display. One of the highlights was witnessing Karen Khachanov, the number 17 seed, triumph over Kamil Majchrzak in straight sets, securing his place in the last eight of the Men’s Singles—a fantastic achievement! Later, we cheered as Laura Siegemund, at 37 years old, achieved a momentous victory by beating Solana Sierra in the Women’s Singles last 16. This was a truly inspiring moment, as Siegemund reached her very first Grand Slam quarter-final, proving that age is just a number.

The excitement continued with the final match of the day—a lively Mixed Doubles encounter featuring Joe Salisbury from Great Britain, playing alongside his talented Brazilian partner Luisa Stefani, against the duo of Andres Molteni and Asia Muhammad. It was a tense and thrilling match, with Salisbury and Stefani narrowly winning in two close tie-break sets. This pair would eventually finish as runners-up in the Mixed Doubles competition, which illustrates how lucky our students were to witness their talents up close.

Overall, the entire day was an absolutely incredible experience for our students. They had the chance to explore the historic grounds of Wimbledon, watch world-class tennis live, feel the buzz of the venue and share these unforgettable moments together.

Over the course of two days, Thursday, 26th June, and Friday, 27th June, we hosted our annual Park House School Sixth Form Taster Days for prospective students who have been offered conditional places to join the Sixth Form in September 2025. These events served as an invaluable opportunity for prospective students to gain an insight into the Sixth Form experience.

The primary aim of these days was to provide students with a comprehensive overview of what life in Sixth Form entails. Participants had the chance to explore our dedicated Sixth Form facilities, spend time in the Sixth Form block, and engage with current Year 12 students, thereby gaining firsthand perspectives on the academic journey ahead. Additionally, students participated in a series of lessons within the PH6 curriculum, allowing them to experience the teaching style and classroom environment of their chosen subjects. This also included exposure to a selection of other subjects, offering a broader view of the diverse range of academic options available at Park House School. Such experiences are designed to support students in making informed decisions about their future academic pathways and to foster enthusiasm for their upcoming studies.

Throughout the two days, each student attended five different academic sessions, ensuring they had the opportunity to explore their preferred subjects in depth while also gaining exposure to other disciplines. This approach aimed to highlight the breadth and richness of the curriculum offered at PHS, emphasizing our commitment to providing a well- rounded and comprehensive educational experience.

In addition to the academic activities, the afternoons were dedicated to a variety of team-building and recreational activities intended to promote camaraderie and community spirit among prospective students. These included engaging challenges such as rocket building and launching, bridge construction tasks, and interactive games designed to develop teamwork and communication skills. For leisure and fun, students participated in activities involving large Sumo Suits and bouncy basketball shooting castles, which fostered a lively and enjoyable atmosphere.

Furthermore, students had the opportunity to test their knowledge and problem-solving skills in Mr. Holland’s renowned Super Sixth Form quiz, which was also enjoyed by current Year 12 students, creating a sense of continuity and community. On the final afternoon, Mr. King organised a barbecue on the Front Lawn fields, where students, staff, and current pupils played rounders and cricket, whilst enjoying delicious food together.

Overall, the two days were marked by high levels of engagement, enthusiasm, and positive energy from all participants. The event successfully provided prospective students with a meaningful glimpse into the Sixth Form experience, fostering excitement and anticipation for their upcoming transition. We are looking forward to welcoming our new Year 12 cohort in September and supporting them as they embark on this exciting new chapter of their educational journey.

District & County Cup Cricket and District Rounders

We've now transitioned into summer sports, with Year 7 & 8 girls and Year 9 & 10 all competing in rounders, while the boys have moved on to cricket. The Year 8 boys kicked off their cricket season in fantastic form with strong performances in both the district and county cups, though they recently faced a tough loss to Kennet in the county cup. Other year groups have experienced mixed results across the board. The girls' rounders teams have had a combination of wins and losses in their district matches, similar to the Year 7s. A standout this term has been the Year 8 girls’ cricket team, who remain undefeated—even when playing short-handed.

District Athletics Success

Our U15 and U17 athletes travelled to Thames Valley for the district athletics meet and delivered an outstanding performance. Several students brought home medals, showcasing their talent and hard work. Charlie and Josh both secured 2nd place in triple jump in their respective age groups, with Ewan finishing 3rd. Ant impressed with a 2nd place finish in the 1500m, while JJ dominated the shot put, taking 1st place. Noah and Melissa both earned 2nd in the 100m sprints, and Tabatha topped it off with a brilliant 1st place in the javelin. A huge well done as these students have made it into the County Athletics competition along with new student, Harriet and Beth in Sixth Form.

Several students also participated in the Newbury Relay races, where several local schools raced in varied relay races. It was great to see schools coming together to join teams.

We were thrilled to welcome back former student and international rugby star Jonathan Joseph (JJ) to Park House School earlier this term. JJ, who played for London Irish and Bath in the English Premiership, was capped 54 times for England and toured New Zealand with the British and Irish Lions in 2017. He’s currently playing for Biarritz in France and dropped in while back in the UK visiting family.

I had the pleasure of hosting a Q&A session with our Year 10 boys’ and girls’ rugby teams—both of whom enjoyed fantastic seasons this year.
JJ spoke warmly about his time at Park House, his early rugby days with Newbury RFC, and the highs and challenges of life as a professional player.
A standout moment from the visit was JJ presenting the school with a signed England shirt—worn during the 2016 Test match against Australia—which will take pride of place in the Joseph House area. He also spent time chatting and taking photos with students, leaving many with lasting memories.

As he nears the end of his playing career, JJ shared his ambition to move into coaching once he hangs up his boots. With a return to England likely when his contract in France ends, we hope to see him back at Park House again before long.

We returned after Easter break with ‘Keepy Uppy’ and surprisingly good fun for our older year students where they were given large air-pumped beach balls to keep in the air like volleyballs.

For international Earth Day, Mr Gianakakis hosted a ‘takeover’ to promote Earth Day. He gave the students an opportunity to make their own seed bombs from soil, clay, water and wildflower seeds to plant in selected areas of the grounds at PHS. What a wonderful idea by Sir and the committee and well done for the effort he’s put into it.

With a positive turn in the weather, we drew out the fun outdoor ideas like ‘Limbo’ and ‘Paper Aeroplanes’ to host at the field at lunch times. Limbo attracted some competitive students, including teachers, to test their flexibility.

We are incredibly lucky that we have a big field to use for Fun Fridays events that encourage students and staff to get involved in the field.

This was an exciting event where all the participants became part of the audience to watch the show and be inspired by the talent, flair and variety of all the dance pieces. Several local schools such as Park House, St Bartholomew’s, Trinity and Mary Hare all created choreography for the show but there were other community dance groups such as Just Ballet, Steps Ahead and the popular Sonia Brown Dancers who also joined the programme to entertain the audience.

On the 7th of April, a group of 40 Year 11 students and 5 staff set off (at the ridiculously early start of 1am) for what was an unforgettable trip to Iceland. The trip gave students first-hand experience of material covered in the GCSE Geography specification. Such is the range of natural features and stunning scenery in Iceland, it was an amazing opportunity to experience this landscape far removed from everyday experiences. It certainly brought classroom learning to life in the most remarkable way.

Day 1: Arrival and The Reykjanes Peninsular

After arriving in Keflavik at 9am, the students visited the Bridge between Continents where the students could stand on the bridge that was built as a symbol of connection over the rift that has formed between the Eurasian and the North American plates. From there we moved on to the Gunnuhver hot springs – a really exciting way to be introduced to Iceland’s magnificent geothermal landscapes. After a lunch stop, we made our way to the Reykjanes Lighthouse which allowed the students to take some great photos – when the cloud lifted and the rain stopped.

After our rather long and busy day we made our way to our accommodation which had the rather spectacular back drop of Eyjafjallajökull (the Icelandic volcano that brought Europe to a standstill when it erupted in 2010).

Day 2: South Shore Tour

The day started with a visit to the Lava and Earthquake Centre in Hvolsvöllur where we learnt all about how Iceland came to be. Students enjoyed the day exploring Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls as well as spending some time visiting the small village of Vik before visiting the Black Sand Beach where basalt columns towered over the beach. Mr Bouzida was most upset not to spot any Puffins who are usually seen flying around this area at this time of year.

In the afternoon we had the privilege of taking a hike on the Sólheimajökull glacier where students were kitted out with crampons and an ice axe, walked up the glacier with an experienced guide and had the opportunity to taste fresh glacier meltwater, and even lean over the edge of a crevasse to see a spectacular waterfall underneath it.

Day 3: Golden Circle Tour

With the fullness of the first two days catching everyone up, it was time to recharge our batteries and the first stop of the day was to the Secret Lagoon – the oldest swimming pool in Iceland. Here the students got the opportunity to bathe in the natural hot springs which are surrounded by geothermal hot spots. The water was a wonderful 40°C and after an hour we all felt fully revitalised and ready to continue our exciting tour.

The next visit was to the Haukadalur Geothermal Area home to the famous Great Geyser which has lent is name to hot springs all over the world ~ Strokkur (The Great Geyser) shoots a column of water up to 30 meters (98 feet) into the air every 5-6 minutes in a thrilling display of natures forces.

After another short drive we arrived at Gullfoss – the Golden Waterfall. This is one of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe created by the Hvítá river, which tumbles and plunges into a crevice some 32 m (105 ft) deep.

Our last stop of the day before making our way to our second hotel of the trip was the remarkable geological site and the most historic site in Iceland Þingvellir National Park . Þingvellir is the site of the world’s oldest democratic parliament founded in 930. The beautiful canyon running through the park is actually the meeting point of two of the earths tectonic plates – the only place in the world where you can stand between two continental plates!

Day 4: Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant, Hveragerdi Geothermal Park, Lava Tunnel and Reykjavik.

Our first stop of the day was to the Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant for an introduction on how Iceland utilises its geothermal energy. Students were given a 20 minute talk about how geothermal energy is harnessed and used and they were then given 30 minutes to have a look around the Power Plant including the turbine room which smelt like rotten eggs from the sulphur.

On our drive to the next attraction, the Hveragerdi Geothermal Park, the weather drew in, and it was clear to see why they say you can experience all 4 seasons in one day. At the Hveragerdi Geothermal Park there was an opportunity to boil some eggs in one of the geothermal hotspots, watch another geyser erupt into the air and then have a taste of some rather unique Lava Bread. (A very sweet, malty cake baked for 12 hours in a geothermal hotspot).

We then drove to the Lava Tunnel where we had some lunch before exploring Raufarhólshellir, the fourth- largest and the most visually enjoyable lava cave in Iceland. We walked through the 1360m long lava tunnel. It was an incredible ethereal experience where we explored rainbow-colored walls and stunning rock formations as we traversed the twists and turns of the cave. A thrilling adventure below the earth, especially when they turned the lights off!

After the thrilling adventure of the Lava Tunnel we then had a more relaxing afternoon where we had some free time in Iceland’s Capital City. Here we visited the Hallgrímskirkja Church, strolled along the streets of Reykjavik, along the ‘Rainbow Street’ and along the harbour front past the Sun Voyager ~ a sculpture to celebrate the city’s 200th birthday.

Day 5: Safe Return Home

Again a very early start was had, we had a breakfast at 3:45am in our hotel before a 5am departure for Keflavik airport and our return flight back to the UK.

Although this trip was action packed and we were all exhausted by the end of it, the trip was definitely enriching. The Year 11 students who went said it has deepened their geographical understanding. Iceland definitely showcased the natural power and beauty of Mother Nature. I want to thank all staff who went as without your help the trip would not have been the amazing success it was.

Last weekend, 53 of our Year 10 and 11 students embarked on an unforgettable football tour to Torquay, packed with football matches, team bonding, and plenty of fun along the way!

The action kicked off on Friday, with our teams taking on Torquay Boys’ Grammar School and Newton Abbot College, securing fantastic victories across the board. The evening’s bowling showdown proved just as competitive, with Mr King delivering a masterclass!

Saturday began with a lovely coastal walk along the Torquay seafront, followed by an impromptu kickabout and another spirited contest…this time on the crazy golf course! The day continued with an exciting trip to watch Torquay United vs. Bath City, a full-blooded clash that had everyone gripped from start to finish.

The final day of fixtures saw goals galore as we faced a local club side and a small independent school, bringing the tour to a brilliant close. Throughout the weekend, our students were a credit to the school, showcasing great sportsmanship, camaraderie, and, of course, some excellent football.

It was a truly memorable trip, and now all eyes turn to South Africa, we can’t wait for the next adventure!

As we move towards the end of the term, it has been fantastic to see the continued enthusiasm and commitment from our students in a range of sporting activities. From football and cross country to hockey, rugby, and netball, our teams and individuals have represented the school with dedication and determination.

The U15 girls had an exciting moment playing their first Football County Cup game against St Bernard’s in their brand-new kit. They got off to a fantastic start, taking an early lead, but despite their efforts, St Bernard’s played around them and secured a 7-2 victory. Although the result didn’t go their way, the team showed great teamwork and sportsmanship, setting a strong foundation for future matches.

On 7th March, over 100 girls participated in the FA’s Let Girls Play campaign during their PE lessons. This initiative, part of a national movement to encourage girls to take up football, was a resounding success, with many students enjoying the opportunity to develop their skills and confidence on the pitch. It was inspiring to see so many young athletes embrace the sport and celebrate the growing opportunities for girls in football.

The cross-country event at Mary Hare saw a number of our students taking on the challenge across different year groups. It was a fantastic day in the sunshine, with some outstanding performances. Special recognition goes to Ant, who placed 5th, Florence, who secured 11th, Sam, who finished 4th, Rohan, who came in 10th, and Oskar, who took 6th place in their respective categories. Well done to all our runners for their effort and determination!

Development days with local schools continued, providing opportunities for students to enhance their skills in different sports. Year 7-9 students had a fantastic turnout for hockey, with Newbury & Thatcham Hockey Club delivering excellent sessions to support their growth in the sport. Meanwhile, the Year 8 girls travelled to Thatcham Rugby Club for their rugby development day, where they gained valuable experience and had the chance to develop their teamwork and gameplay.

Some individual successes include Dylan in Year 8 who came second in a table tennis U15 newbury district tournament, Aanya Year 7 who came 2nd in a County tennis tournament and Sophie Year 11 who travelled to America and became a National Cheerleading Champion with an impressive score of 98.1!

Netball

The netball teams have been incredibly busy as the league matches came to a close. The Year 8's showed great perseverance but ultimately lost their final game to a well-drilled St Bart’s team. The Sixth Form team, however, finished on a high, securing an impressive 19-5 victory against Downs. The Year 9 teams demonstrated grit and resilience, braving the cold and rain to compete in their rounds of matches. Both the A and B teams secured two wins and one loss. The Year 7A team continued their fantastic performances with a 21-10 win, while the B team narrowly lost out 4-3. The Year 10's, despite their commitment and hard work, were unable to secure a final victory, losing 18-4. The Year 11's have had an incredible season, training consistently since the summer, and their passion for netball has been evident throughout. Their A team narrowly lost to Kennet 15-17, while the B team secured a thrilling 18-17 victory against the same opposition.

Overall, the netball league results were outstanding: the Year 7A team finished 1st, the 7B team came 3rd, the Year 8's placed 2nd, both the 9A and 9B teams secured 2nd place, the 11A team finished 3rd, the 11B team placed 2nd, and the Sixth Form team also finished 2nd. A huge congratulations to all players for their dedication and teamwork throughout the season!

Netball fixtures didn’t end there, with additional friendly matches against Leighton Park. The Year 8's dominated their game, winning 38-5, while the Year 7's put up a strong fight but narrowly lost 22-19. On another evening, the Year 9's came away with a strong 21-12 victory, while the Year 10's faced Leighton Park’s best team and put in a determined effort, though they were defeated 33-6. The U18’s also take on Leighton Park in a Netball Under Lights fixture in the last week of term.

Football

The Year 7 football team played fantastically well this season, coming in at 2nd in the district. Unfortunately the first game we played where we conceded a lucky goal determined the final outcome of the league. The growth that this team has made over the season has been fantastic. We have had so many boys turning up to training, which has resulted in the squad being rotated from week to week. This is a real positive as it shows that we have true depth in the squad, and can call upon lots of the Year 7's to step up and play in competitive games.

We ended the season with games against Trinity and St Barts. In both games the boys played extremely well, looking to create space and open up our opponents. A real highlight was the transition from defence to attack, moving the ball around at a quick pace. This has set such a good foundation for the coming years. Things look really positive.

A 4-1 win against Trinity and a 3-2 win against St Barts.

Well done to all that have contributed to a successful season.

The Year 10 Football Team had success again in the District league, winning it for the 4th year in a row. Dominant performances against Trinity, JOG & Mary Hare gave their goal difference a major boost running out comfortable winners. Tighter games against Barts and Kennet posed a bit more of a test but a win against Barts and draw against Kennet meant they took the top spot locally. The County Cup and National Cup was a little disappointing for the players this year with early exits from both after previously doing so well in both but the players will be raring to go in Year 11 to have their last crack at both cups.

The Year 11 Football Team have done well in the District League this term remaining unbeaten in the process with a draw vs St Barts and then wins over Downs and Kennet. There is one more fixture remaining to see if they can stay unbeaten and take the district title against Trinity. The boys have been excellent and it has been lovely to see some new faces this year and many boys playing in the A team. The school football tour also showcased the ability of this year's group with winning both games 4-1 and 9-0. It was an excellent weekend in Torquay and the boys were fantastic. This group will move to senior sport next year where they will thrive.

Senior sport has been great this term with the Sixth Form Football Team having 3 fixtures. These boys don’t all play football outside of school with only a handful actually playing. The boys have been superb with great camaraderie and with the assistance of Year 11 boys stepping up, it has been a really enjoyable term for them. Unfortunately, with two losses and one draw out of the 3 games is what will be shown in the stats but what won’t be shown is their attitude, determination and team spirit to just enjoy themselves and that has been really pleasing to see.

Looking ahead

A massive well done to all students who have participated in sports this term. Your hard work, dedication, and team spirit have been truly commendable. We look forward to seeing what the next term brings in relation to cricket, rounders, athletics and tennis. We hope to build on these fantastic achievements!

Year 10 & Year 11 girls

On Monday 24th March the U16 Girls Park House School Rugby 7s team travelled to South West London to compete at the International Rosslyn Park Rugby 7s Tournament.

The team reached the Quarter Finals of the Cup competition, this meant they were in the Top 8 out of the 50 sides that entered in a competition that has teams travel from across the UK and World (e.g. Dubai and Kenya) to compete. This was a phenomenal result! Due to our performances throughout the day a number of our players were scouted by the Ultimate Rugby 7s Academy and should hopefully be attending training camps this Summer.

The tournament squad contained players from across Year 10 and Year 11. With some students having played club level rugby for many years with students such as Emily Bird, Rachel Hanna, Evie Tatam and Beth Adams having recently represented Berkshire. Whilst other students had only recently started playing rugby and have developed incredibly fast. The way all players have improved at training with Mr King and Mr Wicks since January has been fantastic to see.

Their achievements at the tournament were incredible, all the girls played superbly, they were a testament to the school throughout the day, demonstrating excellent teamwork, tenacity and commitment to play their very best. and we look forward to seeing how the girls continue to progress.

Full Squad List:

After the heroics of the girls’ performance, the boys’ team took to the sun-drenched, hard-baked pitches of Wimbledon Common, ready for their own challenge. They began with a narrow loss to a strong Bishop Wordsworth School side but showed incredible resilience, bouncing back in style with a commanding 33-12 victory over Birkdale School. In their final match, they faced a well-drilled Barnard Castle School team, falling just short despite a determined effort. It was a fantastic learning experience for the squad, and they represented the state sector immensely well!

Year 8 boys

They wrapped up the action-packed week on Friday with energy, enthusiasm, and determination that could light up a stadium. The boys arrived bright and early, buzzing with excitement for the day ahead. "I’ve been up since 4… it’s like Christmas Day!" one of the boys exclaimed, and it was clear their excitement was only just beginning.

From the moment they hopped onto the bus, the air was electric, with laughter and singing filling the journey. The buzz was infectious, and the boys were ready to take on whatever came their way.

The competition was fierce, starting with Maidstone Grammar School. Although the first match didn’t go their way, the boys did not back down. With fantastic tries from Jude B and Freddie S, their fighting spirit was clear, and they kept pushing forward, showing incredible resilience.

The second match also ended in a loss, but the boys had every reason to hold their heads high. Leading for much of the game, a few minor mistakes cost them the victory. But in rugby 7s, those fine margins make all the difference. Oscar L, Oscar M, and Jake L scored some spectacular tries, giving the crowd something to cheer for and showing what these players are truly capable of.

Further tries on the day came from Sonny W, Joe V, Noah B. Throughout the day, the team’s dedication was unwavering. They fought hard, played with passion, and learned invaluable lessons that will serve them for years to come. The boys have set a solid foundation and are now even more hungry to compete with the best. Their drive, determination, and teamwork were the true highlights, impressing not only coaches and peers but also their parents, who were equally amazed by the team’s efforts.

This week has proven that these boys have what it takes to rise to any challenge. The future is bright, and the next chapter in their rugby journey is bound to be full of excitement and success!

In the secluded estate of Kinderholt, our Year 10’s and 11’s braved the last cold nights of Winter, to camp out and endure two days of hiking.

They showed great independence as their teams led themselves to meander through the local estates, occasionally running into farm animals and wild deer, carrying rucksacks full of essential kit.

They all arrived back to camp on schedule to cook themselves a hearty hot meal. And the Activity Centre was a much needed breakout area for them to sit and socialise, play cards and Table Tennis before ‘lights out'.

The second night was a testing one. As the temperature dropped, our students huddled in and stayed warm to get a good night's rest as a thin layer of frost settled on the ground. Their final day started as soon as the sun rose, a great opportunity to pack down tents, cook their breakfast and set off in a warmer temperature.

Waiting for the students towards their final destination in Kintbury, was great for us to see the courageous hikers ready to go home. Thank you to Ridgeline Adventures for their professionalism in the DofE programme, to Mr Bouzida for helping out during the weekend and to Parents & Carers your support.
March marks just over a month since our Year 12 Classics enthusiasts embarked on a thrilling theatrical journey: vibrant, riotous, and utterly unforgettable!

We witnessed the hapless god Dionysus, disguised as Herakles (complete with questionable lion skin and an even more questionable sense of direction), as he descended into Hades to retrieve the great playwright Euripides, whom he believes can save Athenian theatre. Accompanied by his perpetually anxious slave, Xanthias, Dionysus’ journey was anything but smooth.

The play was a whirlwind of slapstick comedy, biting (modernised) satire, and profound philosophical debate. From the chorus of croaking frogs, to the epic showdown between Euripides and Aeschylus, the production was a masterclass in theatrical chaos and brilliance.

What struck us most was the sheer energy and creativity of the performance. An ancient text revived with modern flair, seamlessly weaving in contemporary humour and physical comedy.

Beyond the laughter, “Frogs” offered us a fascinating glimpse into the world of the ancient Greek theatre and society. Deep exploration of highbrow themes, wrapped in layers of humour.

It was a truly enriching experience for our Yr 12 classicists. If you ever get the chance to see “Frogs”, don’t hesitate - prepare to be entertained, challenged, and perhaps even a little bit croaked!

As part of National Apprenticeship Week on Wednesday 12th February 2025 our Year 11 students took part in Mock Interviews to allow them to experience the interview process. The students were superb, professional and really demonstrated great maturity. Our interviewers were very impressed, and enjoyed talking to our students and provided great feedback. The size of our cohort meant we had interviews across the whole school day and I would like to again formally thank all parents and guests who supported this event and welcome more of you into school to get involved in bringing the world of work to our students. In addition, taking on board feedback I will be providing further CV support to students to help those applying for apprenticeships and part time jobs. Due to the success of Mock Interview Day this will become a key feature of my career plan each year and something I am duplicating for sixth form in the summer term.

House System Update: A Thrilling Month of Competitions!

The House System has been buzzing with activity over the past few weeks, with students stepping up to showcase their creativity, teamwork, and competitive spirit. From bridge-building challenges to heated debates, it's been fantastic to see such high levels of participation and enthusiasm!

STEM-SATIONAL: Who Built the Strongest Bridge?

Our latest House competition, STEM-SATIONAL, put students’ engineering and problem-solving skills to the test! The challenge? Build the strongest bridge possible using only straws and tape, while sticking to a strict budget. It was a true test of planning, strategy, and construction skills as teams worked against the clock to design structures that could withstand the most weight.

The competition was fierce, with some impressively strong (and some not-so-strong!) designs making their way to the testing stage. As the weights piled on, the tension in the room was high until finally, we had our winners:

🥇 Joseph House stormed to victory with an outstanding bridge that held the most weight.

🥈 Chaffey House followed in second place with a strong and well-planned design.

🥉 Croft House secured third place with a solid attempt.

🏅 Albert House came in fourth, but their teamwork and effort were commendable!

A huge well done to all students who took part. This competition showcased some truly brilliant engineering minds. Who knows, maybe we’ve got future architects and structural engineers among us!

Meanwhile, our House Debating competition has launched with a bang! The motion up for discussion is:

🗣 "This house moves to ban social media in the UK!"

With passionate arguments on both sides, students have been engaging in lively debates, exploring the impact of social media on society, mental health, free speech, and even the economy. Some teams have argued that social media is essential for communication and education, while others have taken the stance that it causes harm and should be restricted.

It’s been fantastic to see so many students stepping up to share their opinions, challenge each other’s views, and develop their confidence in public speaking. The live finals will be happening soon, so watch this space to see which House takes the title of best arguers in the school!

House Sports: The Competition is On!

The excitement continues with House Sports currently taking place, as students battle it out in Girls’ Netball and Boys’ Football. Players have been showing determination, teamwork, and skill, with plenty of goals, interceptions, and fast-paced action on display.

With house points on the line, every match counts, so whether you’re on the pitch, on the court, or cheering from the sidelines, your support makes a difference!

Results will be announced soon, so keep an eye out to see which House comes out on top.

As we continue through the spring term, our sports teams have been keeping busy with over 20 fixtures played across different year groups. With a mix of victories and challenges, our students have demonstrated outstanding commitment to training, and their hard work is clearly paying off!

Netball Update: The netball teams have been putting in an incredible effort, with many teams seeing great progress and success on the court. The Year 7 A team has been particularly impressive, securing victories in three out of their four matches. Their teamwork and determination have truly shone through. Meanwhile, the Year 7 B team has faced some tough competition, but their perseverance and dedication to improvement remain commendable.

The Year 8 team has had a fantastic run, winning both of their fixtures. Their continued development in shooting accuracy and defensive play has been a key factor in their success. Keep it up, Year 8!

Year 9 had an exciting friendly match against St. Barts, which resulted in a strong win. This momentum carried through into their first round of competitive matches, where both the A and B teams secured victories in all their games. A fantastic achievement for the squad!

Year 10, despite their best efforts, have faced a tough set of opponents and unfortunately haven’t secured a win yet. However, their resilience and commitment to training are promising signs that success is just around the corner.

The Year 11 A team has had a mix of results, with three wins and one loss. Their ability to adapt and work together as a unit has been commendable. Meanwhile, the Year 11 B team secured a great win against Trinity, showing strong teamwork and determination.

The Sixth Form team has had a challenging season so far, losing both of their matches. However, their sportsmanship and effort on the court have been admirable, and we’re confident they’ll bounce back stronger in their upcoming fixtures.

Football Fixtures Update: Our football teams have also been showing great skill and teamwork this term. The Year 7 team has been off to a strong start with a win and a draw. Their defensive play and attacking strategies continue to improve with every game.

Year 8 have had a particularly impressive season, securing victories in the majority of their matches. Their teamwork and ability to control the game have been a key part of their success.

Year 10’s football team has been in outstanding form, winning all of their matches so far. Their dedication to training and strategic gameplay have made them a formidable force on the pitch. Well done to all involved!

Badminton & Rugby Highlights: It’s been fantastic to see so many students getting involved in a wide range of sports this term! The KS3 & KS4 Badminton Festivals were a huge success, with students competing against multiple schools in a display of great skill and sportsmanship. Seeing so many students taking part and enjoying the competition was a real highlight.

Meanwhile, the Year 7 girls had an exciting Rugby Development Day, where new players had the opportunity to come together with students from other local schools to experience expert coaching and develop their skills. It was great to see the enthusiasm and teamwork on display. This Thursday local schools come together for the hockey development day and we look forward to seeing how much the students learn.

Looking Ahead: As we move forward, we encourage all teams to continue their hard work and determination in training. Whether experiencing victory or facing challenges, the spirit and dedication shown by all players have been fantastic. We are proud of each and every student representing the school in sport. Keep up the great work, and we look forward to even more exciting matches ahead!

They were enthusiastically involved in First Aid training, camping skills, orienteering, map reading and cooking skills on their first day. The following day they embarked on a 5 hour hike from Kingsclere to Park House School which resulted in some triumphant faces and all set to take on their Assessment hike. We are very proud of our students who were paid compliments from Ridgeline Adventures instructors and members of the public commenting on how polite and respectful they were during their hike. Well done Year 9 and we look forward to seeing you put the skills to real practice in July.

On Wednesday, 26th February, our Form Captains and Character Representatives from Years 7, 8, and 9 experienced an unforgettable visit to the Houses of Parliament, getting an exclusive insight into the heart of British democracy.

The day began with a fascinating guided tour, taking students through the grand corridors of the House of Lords, where they stood in the very chamber where key national decisions are debated. But the excitement didn’t stop there— just as we approached the House of Commons, we witnessed none other than the Prime Minister himself walking in for Prime Minister’s Questions! Seeing government in action at such a pivotal moment was a real highlight and an incredible chance to witness democracy as it happened.

Adding to the experience, our students had the privilege of meeting Lee Dillon, MP for Newbury (Liberal Democrat), who took time to answer their questions on everything from local issues to national politics. Engaging in direct conversation with an MP gave our young leaders a real appreciation of how Parliament represents the voices of the people.

This visit was an inspiring and eye-opening experience for our students, showing them democracy in action and sparking their interest in how decisions shape our country. A huge thank you to everyone who made this fantastic day possible!

What an amazing week had by everybody on the ski slopes in Artesina, Italy!

91 students and 12 staff set off on the coach on Saturday morning and arrived and settled into our hotel by the Sunday lunchtime. Students had ski boot fitting that evening and enjoyed an evening bum boarding on the slopes.

The next day ski lessons began in earnest with lots of beginners out on the slopes. The progress made was amazing for the staff to watch and for the students to experience. That first evening we had a quiz night that was run by our ski rep.

Second day was another full day of lessons and then in true Italian style a Pizza Night in the hotel.

On the third day everyone was progressing really well so lots of groups headed up on chairlifts higher up the mountains. That evening was snow tubing. There were three runs of varying speeds to go down and then what started off as coming down the slope by yourself soon turned into four or five people coming down at once.

The fourth day was beautiful sunshine and a full on day of skiing. This was followed by night skiing where the slopes are lit up in the evenings. All groups went up to the top of the two slopes and all did amazingly by coming down and doing this loads of times throughout the evenings. The advanced groups made it to the snow parks to try out some of the jumps.

The last day skiing was amazing weather again and our “Fancy Dress Friday”. We saw some incredible outfits on the slopes which included a T-Rex, Teletubbies, Superheroes, Super Mario, a Lobster, Penguins, Winnie the Pooh characters, a Flamingo, a Traffic cone, Bananas and Minions. Students had made a real effort and with 103 of us on the trip it certainly attracted attention from the ski instructors and members of the public.

It was then back onto the coach for the return trip the UK.

The students all made such great progress in their skiing ability and it was incredible to watch this throughout the week. We hope that lifelong memories have been made and that all students had a fantastic time away. We all had #snowmuchfun!

Quotes from students:

“I think the main reason I enjoyed the ski trip so much was because of how much time we spent skiing. The more skiing, the better.”

“I really enjoyed learning more about how to ski and the overall experience was really fun.”

“It was the best experience and such an amazing trip.”

“I really enjoyed skiing so night skiing just made the whole day feel better.”

“It was amazing and a lot of fun, and a good way to spend time with your friends whilst making new ones in the process.”

“It was really fun and I learnt how to ski.”

It’s been a frosty and now wet start back to the January term but as a department we’ve managed to fulfil 13 sporting fixtures over the last three weeks. This term we move onto the main district sports of boys football and girls netball with other sporting fixtures interspersed. Clubs have been up and running since the first week so check the extra-curricular timetable and get stuck in!

Girls netball

There have been some great numbers out to netball club already and the Year 8’s started off the season with their first round of round robin matches. They played Trinity in the first game and won 17-5. There were some great passes and coming forward for the ball across the court with some fantastic shooting. However, in their second game against St Gabs a taller side the overhead pass started to be picked off which resulted in them losing 9-15. The following day the 6th form team played their two matches against St Gabs and Kennet. The team won both with some good play 25-19 and 16-11 respectively, a huge well done to the Year 11’s who played up. The Year 9’s unfortunately fell to storm Herminia and the rain as their matches were cancelled, however keep posted as these will be rearranged.

Boys football

The Year 7s have come back to the year with immediate effect having two tough games to start with.

The boys played Kennet on Tuesday 14th of January, and it truly was a game of two halves. Kennet gained a real advantage in the first half seeing a corner deflected into our own net, followed by a lucky goal where their student went to turn and the ball flew into the goal. What happened then was a real display of character. The boys continued to work hard and not give up. Dominating play from the centre two pairing Harry and Josh saw us dictating the play and testing their defence. Early in the second half we pulled one back and continued to put pressure on a resilient Kennett team. Unfortunately this was not enough and we came out of the fixture with a 2-1 loss. There were so many positives and with continued practice the group of boys could become really good- lots of positives on show.

The next day we were drawn in the cup against Emmbrook. This team is in the quarter finals of the national cup which shows their pedigree. Again we came out as losers of this game, but it was clear that Emmbrook were a real strong outfit. Credit to our boys for showing heart and determination throughout.

We look forward to continually working and training- remember Training is on Tuesday after school!! Bring your kit and be ready to Work Hard!!!

The Year 11s have had a mixed bag in the start of their football campaign. Unfortunately, we were defeated in the County Cup in snowy conditions by a very good Kings Academy side from Binfield. We left ourselves too much to do and lost the game 4-2 after being 4-0 down. The first game of the district season was against St Barts and we were able to take down 23 boys which enabled an A and B team game. The A team drew 1-1 and the B team won 2-0 in a great display showing the A team how it is done. The fixtures continue over the next few weeks and hopefully the boys can sort their league form out. A reminder - Training is on Wednesday after p6 when we do not have a game!!

When reviewing apprenticeships students should look at the level as it may be different depending on their age and the industry, if they are looking to go into a trade, they may need to start at level 2 as although they will have GCSE’s they will need to learn the skills for that chosen career.

On Thursday 23rd January, Graham Waton, the Widening Access Outreach Manager at the University of Bath visited Park House School to deliver a series of assemblies to different year groups.

Graham’s first session was with Year 12 & Year 13 students in the 6th form centre. The students were shown a presentation on why they should consider attending the University of Bath and had a wider discussion about all aspects of University life with Graham. All students found this talk to be very beneficial and informative as it provided them with an opportunity to ask questions about what University would look like for them.

Later on in the day Graham delivered a series of sessions in the Main Hall to Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11 students all about the benefits of University, why they should all consider University as part of their future and busted some myths about the finances of gaining a degree. Our aim was for these sessions to inspire our students and to have them think aspirationally about their futures.

With our Year 9 students making their GCSE choices in the coming months and our Year 11 students approaching a mock exam window this assembly was an opportunity for students to recognise where all their hard work can take them.

Finally, during Y12 parents evening at school that day Graham delivered a series of talks to Y12 students and parents about University life, the finances of University and was able to answer any questions both students and parents may have about the upcoming UCAS application process.

A very worthwhile visit that has resulted in many students having follow up conversations with teachers about University courses, the University of Bath and their hopes for the future.

Following the success of taking the whole Year 7 cohort to The Watermill to see Pinocchio before Christmas, this time it was the turn of the Year 10s (and a good number of Year 11s) who were treated to an evening watching J.B. Priestley's classic morality tale 'An Inspector Calls' at The Mayflower in Southampton. Not only was it invaluable to be able to experience their GCSE text in performance, it was also a chance for the students to savour the atmosphere of an evening at the theatre with friends. To cap a wonderful night, it was great to hear from the usher after the show that our students had been the "best behaved school" all week.

At PHS, we encourage participation and give our students many opportunities to thrive in other areas to try and step outside of their comfort zone. It’s always good to see our year groups sing on stage with their peers and we always look forward to karaoke.

Encouraging students to keep warm during the Winter, we followed with Tell A Joke which is very popular. For Fun Thursday before Inset day, we had a Rhyming Words rally where students had to guess the answers of short questions, which rhyme with a particular word.
