When the going gets tough...

Head in hands

You see, I was right. If you read my blog from 4 June, you’ll know my views on goalkeeping...

I hope he recovers. I hope, in short, he shows resilience.

Resilience is in fact for me the main, transferable theme that has emerged so far from the World Cup - and indeed this last weekend of sport.

However tough it gets, however much you get criticised, whatever the odds against you... never give up hope. Remain ambitious. Continue to set your sights, sometimes quite literally, on your goal.

So we had Germany’s last minute of injury time winner to keep them in the tournament...

England’s come-back to win the final Rugby Test against South Africa - only their fourth ever victory on South African soil - appropriately orchestrated by Danny Cipriani, a player in the international wilderness for the last 10 years...

And Ireland beating Australia for first time in a Test Series since 1979, despite being beaten in the first of the three games...

Resilience

Resilience.

I think it can be the most overlooked, but most important of qualities. All the more significant in an age where, thanks to the touch of a button or a popular TV culture that promotes instant celebrity status, the wider rewards and learning arising from trying hard and bouncing back from adversity can perhaps sometimes be lost...
