May the force be with you in 2018!

Star Wars

Happy New Year!

I’ll try not to spoil too much of the story if you haven’t seen it yet. (But if you haven’t, where on earth have you been all over the holidays!?)

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has many subplots; fascinating connections and tantalising references to past and future episodes of the sweeping inter-galactic saga, an Odyssey of the cinematic age.

Let me be straight from the outset. I just enjoyed the film! Cracking entertainment.

But you’d expect me to find something else in a blog. So...

Perhaps unsurprisingly, I thought that one of the film’s key themes was the on-going power of teaching and learning, or to be more precise, the power of coaching.

Coaching...

Developing a learning partnership. A partnership in which the coach encourages the performer to take ownership of a goal less by telling but more...

By building trust...

By building confidence...

By building self-confidence...

And, through practice, resilience...

So that ultimately the performer - the student - feels empowered to make progress; feels The Force, the power and rewards of learning for themselves.

Throughout the film, Rey - now the central character - wants to be coached in the power of The Force by Luke Skywalker, the Last Jedi…

Star Wars

I go back a long time!

Star Wars

I saw my first Star Wars film forty years ago...

Star Wars

In it, Luke was himself of course himself coached by his own mentor and old Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi…

Star Wars

For me, this clip from the 1977 classic epitomises those tenets of a coaching relationship which I’ve just described...

Drawing out self-belief so that the performer has the self-awareness and heightened sense of responsibility to take ownership of performance for themselves... and make great progress as a result.

It’s a coaching approach which I believe is already characteristic of our culture of learning partnership here at school. But it’s also one that we are looking to build even further in 2018.

It’s all about ensuring that every student feels their Force...
