A perfect journey...

Believe everything that you hear about the trains in Japan. And more.

Their efficiency, pristine condition and use of the very latest technology whilst capturing the best of tradition in terms of the respect and courtesy shown by staff is a metaphor for all that is so special about the truly wonderful country that I had the privilege of visiting last week.

They deliver a perfect journey. And in that respect too also symbolise all that I learnt and experienced during my week away.

So rather than a reflective narrative, I’m going to reference my ‘live’ diary posts from Facebook to convey a sense of the pace and variety of that journey, from its starting point on 5th May…

The view from here... my lecture this morning at The University of Tsukuba’s Department for Global Sport innovation. The students in the photo taking notes from my talk are in fact from disciplines across many different faculties. After each lecture they they write an evaluation of content and key learning points which are reviewed by their tutors. I have requested - selected - translations of their feedback on my performance!

Amazing day continues with meeting in central Tokyo at Organising Committee HQ with brilliantly creative 2020 Education Planning Team. Followed by equally wonderful Japanese hospitality at panoramic restaurant on 46th floor of Dentsu building overlooking what will become many of the 2020 Games venues thanks to Masaru Ariga and Professor Sanada from University of Tsukuba. Currently on route back to base at Tsukuba in still packed commuter train at 9.00pm. What a fantastic first day! Can’t wait for tomorrow!

Excited to be a guest lecturer later this morning for students on the Masters Programme at TIAS - the world renowned Tsukuba University International Academy for Sports Studies.

Absolutely loved giving this morning’s lecture to the amazing students on the University of Tsukuba’s TIAS Masters programme. So proud of what Park House students and staff do and thrilled that the wider potential impact was summarised in this wonderful Tweet from Marianna, one of the students. Just delighted to have had the opportunity to share ideas and approaches with such a brilliant group...

"@DerekJPeaple @univ_tsukuba Thanks for the great lecture and such an inspirational example of how the Olympic and Paralympic values can play an important role on education throughout the world."

A very special day visiting the inspirational Sekimoto Junior High School in the Ibaraki Prefecture. The school was very badly damaged in the March 2011 Tsunami and was rebuilt and reopened three years ago. Had the privilege of observing a superb lesson based on the innovative ‘I’mPossible’ Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Education Programme and was then invited to give an impromptu twenty minute lesson on the Values with the same wonderful Year 7 group!

Final steps on what I said this time last week was going to be an amazing learning journey. And so it has proven, in every way. Inspirational people; creative learning; wonderful country.

Now only fear that in twelve and a half hours time the Heathrow Rail-Air link and GWR may not stand good comparison with their Japanese counterparts!

Arigatou, Japan. Sayonara. Ja mata. Can’t thank you enough for making it possible...

To be fair, on return both the bus and the train home were on time…
