Open all hours...

Open all hours...

A regular highlight of my mid-70s, just in colour, Telly viewing was sniggering at Ronnie Barker's miserly corner shop grocer Arkwright's attempts to balance his time between winning the the affections of his neighbour and unrequited love, Nurse Gladys Emmanuel, and acting as a reluctant father figure to nephew and delivery boy, Granville (played by a young David Jason).

Open All Hours was great... but perhaps not quite the pinnacle of Ronnie Barker's comedy writing genius, which for me at least reached its peak with his smaller namesake in the wonderful 1976 'Four Candles' sketch...

Open all hours.

It couldn't be a more appropriate metaphor for a week in which we hold our annual Open Evening and Morning for prospective students and their parents.

These are of course really important events. Preparation for them focuses the mind on all we do brilliantly, but tend to simply take for granted as, to continue my introductory theme, we just get on with business as usual...

There's of course so much more that our pre-event publicity could also emphasise: the amazing extra curricular programme, Monday Enrichment Clubs and activities, charity fund raising events like last July's Race for Life...

Race for Life

And even the occasional prime time TV feature for our work as a Centre of Excellence for learning in the digital age...

I particularly love the way that Open Evening brings the whole school community together. I love the buzz - and pride - of speaking three times alongside students from Years 7 and 11 and the Head Boy and Girl in the packed Hall to audiences of more than 200; they always steal the show! I love the musicians in the entrance foyer, the Sixth Form student guides and the literally hundreds of young people who so willing and enthusiastically support the work of the departments throughout the night. It's brilliant!

But - and this is what is so important - there's actually nothing special about it; it's not an act; never a set piece.

What you see at Park House Open Evening and Morning is what you get - every day.

A happy, vibrant and caring community full of inspirational young people who enjoy the daily thrill of fantastic learning with brilliantly creative teachers.

It's great to be open all hours...
