Inspired Generation

Inspired Generation Park House School

As I left the Olympic Park watching those banners fluttering in the summer breeze, I made a personal commitment to ensure that the experience of 2012 would indeed, as Seb Coe had promised, inspire a generation. At least at Park House.

Four years on. Rio has provided an equally memorable summer. Many of the most memorable of those moments resonate powerfully at Park House. Those who provided them have also personally helped to shape our values and inspired our students to live them.

Our values. Excellence, inspiration, determination, courage, friendship, respect and equality.

At Park House the road from London to Rio, has for us already become a trail to Tokyo...

Park House Road to Tokyo

Our invitation to support the development of Tokyo 2020's education programme I believe flows naturally from this genuine legacy commitment: a values-themed commitment not about sport, but wide and deep and creative learning across and beyond the curriculum. It was a pleasure to meet Tokyo's Education Minister Mr Hikibi and share thinking about how schools can creatively interpret the Olympic and Paralympic Values - and the inspiration that comes from hosting a Games - to, for example, promote student leadership and volunteering, and challenge ideas about disabilities and people's differences.

It is also offering a fantastic opportunity for the next generation of our students - many of who weren't with us in 2012 and have only started in Year 7 - to forge new international, values-themed partnerships with schools in Tokyo. An opportunity which over the next four years will of course extend to young people yet to join us from their primary schools...

All of this is wonderful. I'd hoped for it. Indeed planned for it. Planned for it as part of that legacy commitment in the Olympic Park, looking at those banners.

What I could not have anticipated is that one of our own 2012 inspired generation would be inspiring the next in 2016... As an Olympian herself!

Last Monday, just three weeks after receiving her A Level results, Annabel Chaffey gave an object lesson in inspiration, sharing with our new Year 7s on their first morning the lessons she has learned on a journey, living the values,  from Park House student to Youth Winter Olympian and Young Ambassador...

And it also I think reflects the deeper impact of what I was proud that Ofsted recognised as the 'values-driven ambition' of - and for - our students. A rounded maturity nowhere better reflected than in the nationally award winning, charity focused and technologically innovative work of Jack Hygate, Connor Humphrey and Laurence Bu-Rashid with eWaterPay in The Gambia….
