Happy New Year... Let Your Force Awaken!

Be honest.

How many of you were thinking this on your way back to work at the beginning of the week?

Dull Signpost

Or this...

Boring Oregon Signpost

Or even...

Dull paired with Boring signpost

And I doubt that many office conversations began, "well, didn't that holiday really drag?"

(Those places do really exist by the way... Dull is a village in the Highlands!)

I know that this time of the year can seem 'samey': already broken New Year resolutions and the January Blues. The most miserable day in the calendar rapidly approaching...

But I trust not so in school after our staff meeting and start of term assemblies this week!

It's all about having a positive mindset; challenging thinking about how we do things. Taking a new perspective. Redefining expectations. Being creative about learning in every sense...

I've been as guilty as any in the past. How often have my start of spring term assemblies focused - with the best of intentions - on the goal at the end of the year? End results. Outcomes. The pot of gold at the end of the rainbow...

Rainbow

But what about the process of getting there? And enjoying the view on the way; the daily challenges involved and the smaller steps.

It's a bit like one of these...

Christmas Jumper

Something we only wear on a special occasion. How often do we say about something that 'I'm saving it for best'... But it never gets worn!

So what if we try make every day a special occasion; a special event when we give of our best? Or do something differently. Or ensure that our happiness has a positive impact on others, inspiring them to do that little bit extra.

I suppose we could call it a 'Personal Best' mentality. There are certainly plenty of brilliant examples in the latest edition...

So role models for positive thinking don't need to come from a galaxy far away.

Star Wars Scene

They are all around us.

However, in terms of external sources of inspiration beyond Park House students I am inclined to cite this man as a world authority...

Bob the Builder

What an exemplary attitude! What a motivator! He certainly gets the best from his team...

And another cartoon character also epitomises exactly the approach I'm talking about...

So when we say Happy New Year over the next few weeks, let's mean it...

Whatever challenges 2016 has to bring.

And embrace them, by thinking positively and differently and actively (more to come on this next week!) about each one as a new opportunity.

In doing so, you'll be letting your own special force awaken...
