Girl Power, Park House Style...

It's exactly twenty years since that lot first gave expression to their version of Girl Power. Last week a different group of young women brought to life for me what it really means....

I'm not exaggerating. In winning the first ever Area Under 18 Women's Rugby 7s Championship, our Sixth Form Girls produced what I can only describe as one of the most compleat team performance I have ever seen.

Because that's exactly what it was. Back in Year 10 this team had already shown their potential in reaching a national final. In the interim, some individuals have taken their passion for the game even further, joining clubs and even gaining regional and national representative honours. That's amazing!

But here it was was also collective spirit, the togetherness that stood out. The way in which they supported and encouraged one another together as a genuine team was really something very special - beginning even before they took to the field when Great Britain Softball international Chelsie agreed to play at the last moment in the absence of another, injured student...

It also wasn't easy, despite the margins of victory.

There were injuries; a visit to A&E. Carys played throughout the tournament with a broken finger...


And it's therefore a fantastic example of the role of sport in building resilience and character. We featured in a case study in this Demos report about it last year...
